I woke up to my first day, this
spring, digging up out of the ground where I avoided freezing cold and snow
coverings. My blood was slow, as usual,
during winter, and my breathing was not much as it is every winter. The sun
hitting the ground where my eyes were closed warmed my shell and, even
though my biology slowed down starting in the fall, I turned my head hungrily
causing me to automatically crunch at some good smelling ants which I non
thinkingly pushed dried leaves away from my nose so I could eat them.
I yawned and got my mind working
again while singing my humanly enjoyable song, “Scar
Track,
Cigar Pack,
Where is My Star Sack?
Cigar Packs?
Cigarette Stacks?
No
wonder that my Pillows Burn!”
As usual, a water floating log is
the place to be. I looked, and swam, and
crawled up one so I could get some minnows swimming in the lunch for me. I noticed other turtles on this bark so far
outside. If my friend human would come
by, I’d like it if he would, as usual, give me an earthworm. I want to keep it
in my mouth’s inside.
When he got here, he said, “Turtles
in the front. Turtles in the rear. I think there are Turtles driving your car. I
like it when Turtles keep getting very
near. Boy, you can sure hear and you don’t see their ear. Just realize, if you can’t see, maybe you
don’t have eyes. And don’t tell me,
‘Eye, eye, eye. Captain Abraham.’ A ham
is a ham, of course, of course, and no one could talk to me on this course.”
When we first met, I told him, “Turtle
me this. And turtle me that. I ain’t a
turkey so, turtle me so.” I think he
said, “Me So! My So! My Soul!
Yes, Mice Owe Too!”
He picked me up and while looking at
my nose he asked, “Are you a Sea Turtle?
I See You,
Turtle. It must have been too Icy for you, the Turtle.”
I told him, “Snapping Turtle is what
I’d rather play. I get hungry eating all
this hay.
I just abhor
being treated like a horse or a mule.
Why don’t you just give me a ground burger and I’ll stick out my head
towards you.”
He told me, “A soft shelled turtle
feels well to me and he seems to like it, too.
I try to pet snapping turtles. I
feed box turtles and tortoises. And I
don’t leave the squirrels and skunks alone either. I like all living things. But I do feed you fish.”
I continued staying in this local
forest with its stream of which a ten person office was built and held a
manager’s working people. Next to their
parking lot my stream occasionally kept a pool of water in which I slept in
during the daytime so I could go out and eat at night. My new friend, who is one of the workers,
takes walks after his lunch and notices me a couple times, then and now. He sure starts waking me up and handing me
cuts of hamburger, pieces of apples, and he’d lift up rocks to grab worms and
hand them to me.
He isn’t the only living thing I
share my life with. I have another friend who started out being kept in an
aquarium. He was let out into the woods
when his owner left home in order to work and his owner’s father put him in the
creek. He was so used to be given a dish
of hamburger and a bowl of new water each morning. It took him some time and some hunger to
teach him to swim in deep water and bite at fish. He began crawling on the mud where trees and
grass grew and he taught himself to dig the opened up from grass ground and he
would eat worms. Ants were tasty for
him. Chomping on grass tasted good too.
I also have another friend who is
called a box turtle. He was kept by a
teacher in order to show off to her class of third graders. She thought she was showing them how to get
along with this world. He was kept in a
large sized cage with hay along the bottom and he shared his opened log and
lettuce and cut chickens along with a bowl of water with five hamsters and two
rabbits.
In the winter, in my owner’s
basement, two of his school friends were visiting me. One looked through the glass and said, thinking
of Frogs and Hamsters and Snakes and Minnows and Me: ”Five! Live!
Drive Hives! Hide by his Side! He got
Spied!”
His friend said, “You think you are
such a Great Guy from your Theft Incarnation.”
My friend and feeder said: “There’s a Man Owned Turtle. You got to pet his Beak. After the
Fall, when snow Falls, His home gets cleaned once a week.”
